1. SANTA MARINELLA BEACH
Santa Marinella is our favourite beach near Rome. Just an hour away from Rome this beautiful beach is lined with palm trees and a popular spot for locals. The beach is sandy and clean, and the water is clear and calm. There are several beach clubs, and restaurants nearby where you can enjoy a delicious seafood meal. Santa Marinella is a perfect destination for those who want to spend a relaxing day at the beach, swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the sea breeze.
If you’re looking to escape here overnight, the Hotel Del Sole is just footsteps from the beach and offers it’s own sun beds for guests.
2. FREGENE
Fregene is a lively beach town that has become a hot spot for trend setters due to its trendy beach clubs and restaurants. On summer evenings, crowds head here for aperitivo by the beach whilst watching the sunset. The beach itself is wide and spacious, with a long stretch of golden sand and clear blue water. Fregene is the perfect destination for those who want to combine beach time with water sports and socializing.
If you have a car, we recommend a stay at Santa Lucia Maccarese – Residenza Agricola, just a 5 minute drive from Fregene. Otherwise, Il Miraggio is in the heart of the action in Fregene and a great pick.
3. ANZIO
Anzio is a charming town with a beautiful beach and clear waters. Furthermore, the town has a relaxed beach-side atmosphere but there’s no shortage of restaurants and cafes nearby. You could even call Anzio a hidden gem of Rome, given that mostly locals travel here. If you like to combine a bit of history and culture into your holiday, Anzio is also home to an ancient Roman villa, Emperor Nero’s seaside palace. Given the local nature of Anzio, you’ll find some great artisanal food and dessert in the town. Finally, if you’re wanting to head to Ponza, you can catch a ferry there from Anzio.
4. SPERLONGA
Sperlonga is a great destination for travellers seeking an authentic Italian beach experience. The crystal-clear waters and breathtaking views make it a picture-perfect location for relaxation and rejuvenation. The beach is backed by impressive cliffs and hills, providing opportunities for adventurous travellers to hike and explore.
Beyond the beach, the town of Sperlonga itself is a charming location to explore. It is situated on a hill with narrow streets and picturesque houses, giving visitors a glimpse into Italian village life. The town is rich in history, with several archaeological sites, including the ancient Villa of Tiberius, a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage.
